The Need

The Need:  Missionaries overseas are overwhelmed with extreme spiritual, social and material needs. Intense ministry and spiritual battle puts tremendous pressure on marriages and family relationships. This pressure is multiplied as we send more families to restricted access countries in the 10/40 window, where they lack the support systems of more traditional missionaries.

When they return to the U.S. for “furlough,” they are expected to travel with their families, usually during the hot, humid summer months. They speak with churches and individuals, raise new support, take care of medical, dental and educational needs, purchase hard to find items, visit family members, and on and on. They travel thousands of miles by car, sleeping in different beds every other night – four to five in a motel room or in someone’s spare bedroom. They, and their kids, are on display 24 hours a day. And then, when they return overseas, their neighbors often ask, “How was your vacation?” These pressures, home and abroad, are leading to more cases of burn-out and premature departure from the field. These precious laborers need care.

The Response

Shelter Ministries was founded in 2001 to “provide the poor wanderer with shelter.” Isaiah 58:6,7. We provide a place where missionaries can recover their energy and renew their vision; a place where they can reconnect as families, and linger with Jesus, so that He can meet with them and speak to their soul and spirit. It’s a safe place to rest, walk, pray, read, play with their kids, get re-acquainted with their spouse, evaluate, renew and regroup.

Is it time for a break?
Is God asking you and your family to come away with Him, to be renewed personally, to spend time with your family, to be refreshed by His presence?
